Dimetapp DM Elixir 2mg/5ml
Description of product:  purplish grape flavored/odored liquid, packaged in 4 oz., 8 oz., or 12 oz. bottles; alcohol free preparation
Active ingredients:  Brompheniramine Maleate, USP 2 mg; Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride, USP 12.5 mg; Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, USP, 10 mg.
Inactive Ingredients:  Citric acid, FD&C Blue 1, FD&C Red 40, Flavors, Glycerin, Propylene glycol, Saccharin sodium, Sodium benzoate, Sorbitol, Water.
Mechanism of Action: Brompheniramine Maleate, 2 mg. (antihistamine) helps the runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, and sneezing by blocking the activity of histamine; Phenylpropanolamine HCl, 12.5 mg. (decongestant) helps nasal congestion; Dextromethorphan HBr, 10 mg. (cough suppressant) reduces coughing by affecting the medullary cough center.
Indications for Use:  This product temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation as may occur with a cold; for temporary relief of nasal congestion, hay fever symptoms, or other upper respiratory allergies associated with inflammation of the sinuses. Dimetapp DM also temporarily relieves runny nose, sneezing, itching of the nose and throat, and itchy watery eyes;  and promotes better and clearer breathing through the nose.
Directions for Use: Adults and children 12 years and older:  Take 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours
                                Children 6 to under 12 years of age:  Take 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours
                                DO NOT EXCEED 6 DOSES IN 24 HOURS!
                                Children under 6 years:  consult a doctor
                               * If conditions do not improve within seven days, consult a doctor *
Storage/Expiration of Product:  Store this product at room temperature (68-77 degrees F); do not use after the expiration date appearing on side of the box; not a USP elixir.
Warnings:  Side effects- May cause drowsiness; do not take with alcohol, sedatives, or tranquilizers because it may increase the drowsiness affect.  Do not take this product if taking sedatives or tranquilizers before consulting your physician.  Use caution when driving a car or operating machinery or any other activity that requires extreme alertness.  This product may cause increased excitability, especially in children.  DO NOT EXCEED RECOMMENDED DOSAGE:  if you notice nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness, promptly discontinue the product and consult a physician.  Do not take this product if you have a preexisting breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis or a persistent chronic cough such as one occurring  with smoking or asthma or if there is heavy phlegm with the cough.  If you are pregnant or nursing a baby, consult a doctor before using this product.
Contraindications:  Consult a doctor before taking  this product if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, or difficulty urinating due to enlargement of the prostate gland.
Drug Interactions:  Do not take this product if you are currently on a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), for depression, psychiatric or emotional disorders, or Parkinson's disease, or for two weeks after discontinuing the MAOI drug.  If unsure whether your prescription drugs contain MAOI agents, consult a physician before taking Dimetapp DM.
Therapeutic Effects:  When taking this product the following should be expected:  temporary relief of nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, coughing, and sneezing. Relief should be noticed within one hour and should last four to six hours.
Signs/Symptoms of Adverse Effects:   If any rash, increased coughing, dizziness, or any other abnormal effects are seen, discontinue the product right away and consult your doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions: 
Is it safe to take this product with alcohol? 
One taking this product should avoid all alcoholic beverages because they will increase the sedative effects of the drug.
What if I am not sure as to the type of cough I have?  As in any case of uncertainty, consult your doctor, who will best be able to advise you and make a good recommendation as to which kind of cough you are experiencing.
Is it safe to take this product if I have chronic allergy symptoms?  This drug is mainly for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with the common cold, hayfever, and throat irritation.  It may be more beneficial to you to consult your doctor and have him recommend an appropriate prescription product for your allergies.
Is this product safe to take with other over the counter cold/allergy products?  It is not advised to mix drug products, regardless if they are over the counter products or not.  In some cases, it is better to use a single product, and in other cases it is more beneficial to use a combination product or multiple products.  Before deciding to take a product with anything else, it is best to consult your doctor or pharmacist for the best solution for your particular problem.
