Student Course Evaluations:
MA2610 Java, SPRING 1998

Select a Question: 1. , 2. , 3. , 4.  or 5.

1. Describe how you felt this course improved your Internet and programming skills compared to what you already knew when you began.

I started this class with little knowledge on programming. I knew how to use the Internet. I learned a lot about programming.

I learned a lot from "Windows and Internet" last year but became more proficient and faster with my Internet and programming skills in Java.

I know a lot more about the Web "set up" and how I can manipulate objects on the Web and create my own Web pages with links.

Java allowed me to get to know computers. I learned a lot which involved animation, centering and color swirls.

I have learned A LOT in this class. I feel that this class has enhanced my knowlege.

My Internet skills were excellent before entering this class because that is what my job involves. I had already programmed in other languages, but never Java. This class helped me learn the new logic/structure of Java.

I was computer illiterate before this class, and now I am not afraid to try new things with computers. Throughout the course I learned that in most cases, you can always look for ways to fix a problem or improve assignments.

It improved every aspect of Web design. I was taught how to make a Web page with Netscape Composer and how to make and put up applets with Java.

Well, in the beginning of this course all I knew how to do was check my e-mail and type papers on a word processor. Now I am much more empowered. I have learned how to make Web pages in Netscape Composer and also use Java to create Applets. I have also found that this course has taught me things I could use in other classes.

2. In your opinion, do you think that this course made a contribution to the skills useful for success in other courses and/or to the computer literacy and skills necessary for one to be considered an "educated professional" ?

Yes, I found out a lot about computers and how programs worked.

Yes. It helps a student with problem solving. I liked how Dr. Pais wrote out a program and then told us to change it to do other things (therefore problem solving).

I think the basic information on building a Web page is crucial for anyone. It is necessary for everyone to be able to do this. However, the Java programming, honestly, I will probably never use again.

Yes. One must be able to utilize the computer to succeed in life.

Yes.

Yes. The world is moving toward an Internet-based society. I think knowledge of how the systems work is imperative to using the Internet which is necessary for any professional.

Yes, this course helped me to make/create a resume and learn computer skills that will be useful in a professional field.

Yes. It shows you how to use your computer more in depth, and everything is going computerized.

Yes, definitely. The project in which we created our resumes was very helpful in showing us:  ways to promote ourselves to prospective employers once we graduate from StLCOP. Since computers are very important, this may be very handy in the future.

3. Was this course "fun" as advertised?  If so, describe what you felt most contributed to this in terms of both the content and structure of the course.  If not, explain why and try to give suggestions that would help make it more fun.

Yes, this course was "fun". I liked working on the computers and making the applets different.

Yes. I have always wondered how animation was done on the Internet, and it was fun learning a little about it.

Yes. It was fun. It was made simple enough, and hard for more experienced people. Projects were cute and fun to work with.

I enjoyed this class in which I learned a great deal.

Yes. You got to do it "your way". You were the designer.

Yes, the peer learning made the course fun, and it was exciting to see what other students were creating and compare their work with mine.

Yes, it was fun. We got to make our own Web pages and do neat things to them.

Yes, it was fun because Dr. Pais makes you feel comfortable with the computer even if you are completely clueless, and he runs a very liberal classroom which is also helpful.

This course was "fun", but I also wish we would have covered more material. I think less animation work and more GUI and interface work would have been better; maybe even database.

4. Reflect on whether or not you feel that you gave your best effort in the course, and if not, what do you think you might have done differently that could have improved your learning?

I feel I gave a really good effort. I came to computer lab in my free time and did extra work for the class.

I felt the only effort I could have put into the class a little more was reading the book more. If I did this, I could have spiced up my applets a little better.

I'm not sure I gave my "BEST" effort because I found Java programming very hard, and I wasn't really able to pick it up like I had wanted to. I read the first few assignments, but found them hard to apply. I guess if I gave my best effort, I would have spent more time outside of class programming and reading assignments.

I have put the same effort in on this class as I have my other classes.

Yes. I feel that the class was very good. Maybe a little too fast, but I tried to keep up the best I could.

Yes, I often spent 2-3 hours outside of class experimenting and working on assignments.

Yes, I gave my best effort. I tried my hardest to make things look neat and presentable

Yes, I think I gave a lot of effort because I have been able to use what I've learned and apply it toward my other courses.

I think a lot of the assignments were too easy, but I am also a programmer, so I picked up on the code a lot faster than most. I could have made the class harder by doing projects. I chose instead the generic ones, but the rest of my classes were too demanding.

5. Any other suggestions for improvement, regarding the instructor, course content, or structure?

I think the class is taught very well and I had a great time in this class. Dr. Pais did a great job of teaching the class and helped me out when I had problems.

Go a little slower when learning a new programming technique.

Dr. Pais is a good teacher and helps the classmates when in need of assistance.

Slow down a little. I'm not a computer genius like some--but I can catch on! This class is the only class I was confident in passing and that is because I know the professor cares! Other professors--.......--need desperately to take a lesson from Dr. Pais!

It was nice to have a small class size. This helped students to have more "hands on" computer time with the instructor when needed. Dr. Pais is very excited and his enthusiasm helps students to become more involved with computer programming without being intimidated.

No! I think the course is set up about perfect and should not be changed.

I think this is a great course, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Java, html, or computers in general.

StLCOP students in general probably are not looking for this type of class. Students need more basic information on the Web and contents. (I think a class here provides this.) Dr. Pais is a very nice teacher--willing to help you, but this course just doesn't fit into the traditional StLCOP curriculum. However, I found it to be fun. :)

Cover more GUI/database and less animations.--Cover more material from the book.--Make assignments harder, and more of a challenge to get this to work than a change which usually takes 1 line of code.
