Note that this semester I used a standard course evaluation comprised of questions of the form: "on a scale of 1 to 5 ... ". Below are the free form written comments that some students chose to add to the evaluation. I liked the way in which we have encores, if we don't pass the first task. I also like the way they are graded. The instructor needs to clarify things better and bring the material to the level which students understand better; there should be more time and practice before tasks (tests) taken. The computer classwork didn't help me learn calculus. It was just busy work. The MTS helped my grade a lot but didn't really help me learn better than normal methods. If students are not able to use the graphing part of their calculator on tasks--what is the point in using the computer for homework, when homework is what prepares you for the tests? I like the MTS it does let me control what grade I want to receive. I liked his pharmacy approach to calculus--it exposes us to problems we will face in our career. However, I do feel that the course was somewhat rushed through the basics of calculus. At the beginning of the course he needs to explain computer class work related to the tasks better, because I personally never had material presented to me this way before, so I was lost for awhile. I had trouble in this class when I started out trying to learn in class. When I finally broke down and got a tutor, I began to learn. I just find it hard to learn from Dr. Pais. The course in general is great. At mid-terms I had a 55% now I have a 79% and it will increase even more. The course is set up so everyone has a chance to learn it at their own pace. Everyone that leaves this class eventually learns the material. The MTS works wondefully I learned much more with this system than I would have without it. You still have to earn your grade and work hard--but it pays off! Dr. Pais makes it difficult to understand concepts. He doesn't make new ideas clear, and makes even simple things difficult to understand. In this course, I feel I have control over my grade. If at first I make a mistake on a quiz, I have the opportunity to redo the quiz and actually learn the material. I thought the MTS was very beneficial to my learning. I found this program to be more organized and helpful than the book. I think I earned the grade I received because I did the work and understood the material. Dr. Pais helps people to understand what is going on an uses his resources. I really didn't learn too much, but I have had calculus before. I did get a better understanding of the applications. I really like my grade in this class and I believe I earned it! The system of grading was great--the MTS enabled students to learn the material even if they didn't get it the first time. Many times in other courses you get one chance to learn the information, sometimes you mess up on exams and you never really learn it because you never have to deal with it again. Dr. Pais was really an excellent teacher. He seemed very concerned with the well-being of his students. He concentrated on whether we knew the material or not. He was also understanding to the pressures of college life and how everyone needs a 2nd or 3rd chance. MTS helped but only with the following of class discussion on the topic. In my academic career I have not had a good math teacher; Dr. Pais is no exception. Although he uses the MTS system, I still feel that if I had a better teacher, I would've learned more. Dr. Pais has to use the MTS, how else could he expect to cram an entire "chapter" into one week, test his students, and expect all of them to understand it right away and make good grades! MTS helped me quite a bit, it made me work harder because there was a minimum grade requirement I had to achieve. I liked it. MTS improved my learning by removing a lot of the pressure that would be associated with having only 1 or 2 exams per semester. It definitely improved my grade but I did have to work hard for that grade. The MTS has helped me learn math because it gives me an opportunity to redo anything I didn't understand in the first performance. I feel like my math grade has improved with this system because you are forced to relearn the things you weren't clear on. MTS helpful in learning process of mathematics. Concentrating on one step at a time allows for me to learn more. Overall I thing the MTS is beneficial to students because it gives you the chance to take and retake things, it reduces anxiety and pressure when taking a test. Using the computer helped to visualize things and then I would go home and work things out manually. The class gives everyone the opportunity to make
a good grade. It's a little confusing at the beginning, but once you get
the hang of it, it is easy. Sometimes Dr. Pais lectures a little fast and
if your not understanding perfectly or are afraid to ask questions, it's
a little hard. Overall a fun class (one of the few in this school).
