Student Course Evaluations:
MA1100 Calculus, SPRING 1996

Note that this semester I used a standard course evaluation comprised of questions of the form:  "on a scale of 1 to 5 ... ".  Below are the free form written comments that some students chose to add to the evaluation.

The teacher's a nice guy, but he's a poor teacher and Ididn't learn much, just got really confused.

I have really enjoyed this calc class with Dr. Pais. I want to also take physics with Dr. Pais. I feel his method of teaching not only benefits him but also us.

I think the mastery task system was quite helpful. He gave us 3 chances to pass it. I know that has really helped my grade out.

This class was good because you knew exactly what was going to be on the tests. The computer does work sometimes, seemed to confuse me.

I liked the encore system. It really improved my grade. I haven't got this good of grade in a math class in 4 years.

I think the MTS was really great and should be continued. It gives students a second chance when there are so many tests to prepare for.

I feel that this was a good class even though it was taught in a very unique way.

Dr. Pais is an excellent teacher who seems genuinely concerned about his students and their progress.

I like the way that the class was organized. I like the idea of encores and quizzes every week.

As all other math in this school, he is terrible. Taught over everyone's head and sent us to the computer so that he wouldn't have to explain. It took me a month to understand him when we had quizzes, etc. Awful teacher. I don't want him for physics. I taught myself throughout the semester. I didn't get anything out of him except confusion.

Instructor: Great, slow down! Had a hard time explaining things. It's not that he didn't try, I think his brain waves are way above ours! Method: Good for GPA. It's actually self learning.

We taught ourselves. The computer was a pain ...!

Dr. Pais is a very good teacher. He is very enthusiastic about the course material and he encourages students to do their own work and to think critically. I am looking forward to having John Pais as my physics teacher next year.

I really like the tasks. These forced me to really learn the information. This was the best that I have ever done in a math class.

I liked the fact that we could take encores over and over; I didn't like the computer work.
